Happy National Egg Day!

Happy National Egg Day! I know…I realize it seems like there is always something to celebrate, and sometimes I lose track of all of our national holidays. However, National Egg Day is something I can get on board with. Hahaha!

So, today we will be talking about eggs and some fun facts surrounding them.

Did you know?

  • The Department of Agriculture predicts that the average American eats 250 eggs per year. That means there’s approximately 76.5 billion eggs eaten in the U.S. alone each year! That’s a lot of eggs!
  • Eggs contain high quality protein. Protein packed meals help sustain our mental and physical energy throughout the day.
  • Eggs are KETO friendly! They contain zero carbs and zero sugar, but are rich in protein and amino acids.
  • Eggs are naturally gluten-free.
  • The color of the egg doesn’t mean they taste different. What you feed your chickens will determine that.
  • Eggs come in all different colors and sizes and that’s determined by the breed of the chicken.
  • Eggs have an incredible shelf life and can stay fresh long after their “sell-by” date.
  • If they’re farm fresh, eggs can remain unwashed on your counter for weeks. This is because chickens put a protective covering on their eggs called a “bloom”. If this gets washed off however, you will want to refrigerate!
  • Egg shells are full of calcium. These shells can be used to enrich your garden soil or even fed back to your chickens to provide the calcium they need to produce hard shells.
  • The size of an egg depends on the age of the hen. The older she gets the larger her eggs become.
  • Farm fresh eggs are the reason most people get into raising backyard chickens. I’ve said this many times and I’ll say it again… Go ahead and get your flock! Enjoy those eggs! But, be prepared to fall in love with these sweet birds. They will change your life!

Once again, Happy National Egg Day! Celebrate accordingly today and EAT EGGS!
