Most of you know that I love to keep cooking simple, fairly quick and always delicious. I’ve only cooked with fresh herbs for about the last 10 years but am by no means an “expert”. We’re creatures of habit, so I kind of stick to the same herbs, but it works for us! In the winter, we cook a lot of hearty comfort foods, so I decided to go with basil and cilantro for my indoor herb garden. You can make it as small or as large as you want, but I wanted to keep mine simple and cute. My summer herb garden is much bigger with a larger selection of fresh herbs.
Important Information About Herbs
Herbs need 6-8 hours of sunlight every day. That is sometimes hard to come by in the shorter daylight hours of winter. If you can place your herb garden in a sunny spot with a south facing window, they will more than likely do okay. The other thing herbs need is a lot of humidity. I mist mine with a spray bottle to avoid over watering. Herbs need to be in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Outside of sunlight and proper moisture, your herbs should be pretty well self-sufficient! I feel like people get a little intimidated by cooking with fresh herbs…I used to be one of them! It’s really not hard, and the flavor profiles don’t even compare!
Chickens LOVE herbs as well! I like to add some fresh herbs into their treats, especially in the winter, so they can get some greens. The girls go wild and I know they are having a healthy treat. It’s a win for everyone!
In these long days of winter, bringing some fresh herbs into our home, makes me feel a little bit closer to summer and warmer days ahead. Do you like to cook with fresh herbs? What are your favorites?
