Developed by Reginald Appleyard of England in the 1930s, Silver Appleyards are considered the most active foragers among the heavy weight class ducks. Their calm temperaments and beautiful plumage, with colors including reddish, chestnut, silver-white, grey, brown, and buff, make them an excellent ornamental pet duck. Appleyards are known to have very flavorful, lean meat. Mature adults weigh between 5 to 6 pounds. Reputedly the best egg layers among the heavy weight ducks, they tend to be broody and can hatch their own young. Females lay approximately 220-270 extra-large white eggs a year. Since the Silver Appleyard duck is hardy in both hot and cold climates, they make a great triple purpose duck that is an excellent addition to any flock.
