Today we’ll discuss a fun little project you can do with your kids. It’s inexpensive and a great boredom buster! Plus, it’s an easy way to decorate your garden how you want it. I’ve never really considered “decorating” my garden with rocks, but this is something I can get on board with. Painting rocks will be a fun conversational piece when you have friends and family walking the gardens. This is a great tutorial blog to get you started!
When painting rocks, it’s important to use the right paint so that the designs can withstand the weather elements. We use acrylic paint. This paint has stood the test of time, rain, wind, sun and dust. It’s non-toxic, so it won’t harm your plants. It dries quickly and is your best choice for paint. Plus, the color options are almost endless with acrylics!
You’ll want different sized synthetic or nylon paint brushes to choose from so you can do different designs. You don’t need to spend much money on paintbrushes for rock painting. I usually pick up a bag of brushes of various sizes. You can also use markers or pens to decorate rocks.
When choosing rocks to decorate, it’s easiest to select smooth rocks, but honestly, that’s the best part of this project; you can use whatever rocks you want! That’s why creativity is so fun, right? Let your kids imagine what they wish to pain, whether it’s a ladybug, a turtle, a flower, or something else and have them go “rock hunting” while you set up a painting station. I highly recommend putting down a plastic tablecloth or newspaper to protect your tabletop.
After you’ve painted your rocks and they’re completely dry, you’re ready to go “plant” them in the garden! Letting your kids place their rocks where they want is half the fun. They may not choose to put it where you might, but let them be creative. We’ll never get these years back with our kids. Our oldest just graduated from high school. The days are long, but the years are short, right? Enjoy these little moments while your kids are young. You won’t regret it!
