Welsummer

The Welsummer was developed as a dual-purpose bird, near the village of Welsum in the Netherlands, after World War I. The Welsummer hen lays large eggs, which are a terracotta dark brown, often with dark speckles. It is a light, friendly, and intelligent breed, with rustic-red and orange color. Like the Marans, the Welsummer tends to be more athletic, taking to foraging and free ranging more often than other breeds. The roosters of this breed are stunning, so much. Hence, the rooster you find on the Kellogg’s Cornflake cereal box is a Welsummer named Cornelius.
